Rugby at University and College

An increasing number of higher learning institutions have been adding rugby as a sport. Some can provide assistance for talented players. Others do not provide assistance, but can be influential in the admissions process. The only way to find out for sure is to contact the respective coaches and begin a dialog - preferably in your Junior year.

Wildcats Rugby Club coaches have a long history of coaching players who have then gone on to excel at the university level including a number of Cal Golden Bears including last season's captain, members of UCLA Rugby including the most recent UCLA President, a significant number of St Mary's Gaels, UCSB Gauchos, Cal Poly Mustangs and so on. Please speak early to the Director of Rugby if you think you might be interested in pursuing rugby at university. There is work to do as early as Junior year to find the right fit for you.

Don't forget that rugby is now a professional sport and for some exceptional athletes, rugby can become a professional career. While most professional rugby players have attended university this is not always the case and like baseball, it is possible to become a professional rugby player without attending college. This is much more likely abroad including in Australia, England, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Careers in Professional Rugby gives good advice to those who might one day aspire to professional rugby.
